Course Brief

This short course in digital audio production and engineering covers the fundamentals of the recording studio environment. The course is designed to aid the development of students' problem solving skills, so that they will be able to effectively function in the field of sound engineering and audio production within an ever-changing technological environment.

Target Audience

  • Persons having an interest in music technology specifically audio production and engineering.
  • Individuals with a musical background such as musicians, sound operators, vocalists or hobbyists.
  • Students studying in the field of media and communications
  • Media Personnel

  • This course is offered in 42 contact hours.

On completion of this course, learners will be able to:

1.    Competently operate the logic pro digital audio workstation.
2.    Sequence edit and mix their own musical compositions.
3.    Utilize hardware devices such as audio mixers and microphones in their audio projects.
4.    Set up their personal workstation  to suit their.
5.    Integrate applications and automate features to maximize efficiency.

 
  • Music Appreciation and Critical Listening
    (Learning Outcome 6) Learners will critically assess various genres of music to understand different musical structures, instruments used and feelings evoked.
  • Nature of Sound and Signal Flow
    (Learning Outcome 4) Learners will learn the characteristics of sound waves and their behaviour in an enclosed environment and measures taken to control it.
  • Instrument Pulgins
    (Learning Outcomes 1) We take a look at the logic pro work area and the tools used within logic to create musical arrangements.
  • Programming Drums
    (Learning Outcome 1) Utilizing logic’s ultrabeat plugin learners will go through steps to creating their original drum patterns
  • Arranging the Song
    (Learning Outcome 2) Learners will start arranging their musical pieces into intro, verses chorus, etc to develop their basic loops into fully arranged songs.
  • Cables and Connectors
    (Learning Outcome 3) We take a look at the various cables used in connecting audio hardware components as well as the concept of midi and midi enabled devices.
  • Signal Chain
    (Learning Outcome 4) Learners will be introduced to the concept of the recording chain and get the opportunity to hook up a workstation and correctly route audio.
  • Microphones
    (Learning Outcome 3) Learners will be taught the various microphone types and techniques in order to optimize the quality of the intended recording.
  • Mixing
    (Learning Outcome 2) We go through the concept of mixing audio from balancing levels.
  • Mixing
    (Learning Outcome 5) The utilizing of tools such as automation and panning.
  • Mixing
    (Learning Outcome 5) The use of dynamics in efforts to give the learner’s production finished sound.
  • Routing
    (Learning Outcome 5) The concept of the audio bus and auxiliaries will be introduced which will allow for a more efficient workflow.
  • Final Mix
    (Learning Outcome 5) The learner will start preparing his project for the mastering stage by ensuring it meets the requirements of the mastering engineer.
  • Music business/ Closing
    (Learning Outcome 6) We come to the end of the programme with a look at the music business industry both locally and internationally and how to compare.
