On Monday, 17 October, 2011, the Student Services Department hosted a Divali programme at the Champs Fleurs campus. The event, which was a collaborative effort of Student Services and the students, drew a large audience which included staff as well as the general student body.
The show, hosted by Dillon Gosien (ACCA student) and Mary Lynn Beharry (Student Services Assistant), opened with a mantra done by MCITP student Artma Persad. This was followed by an address to the audience from Executive Director Dr. Robin Maraj.
The show consisted of several performances from various academic disciplines. ACCA/FIA student Rehanna Gopaul sang three Bhajans (devotional songs), as did duo Jonathan Rajpaul (ABE student) and Varshan Sankar (City & Guilds EEET student). Several dance items were included throughout the show. ABE student Neela Jaglal first performed an Indian classical piece and later a film/theatre piece. Additionally, the dancers of Kaizaan Shakti Dance Co. led by Katana Mahabir gave a most entertaining film/folk performance.
The show took an even more interesting turn during the modeling segment. There were many styles of salwars (or shalwars), sarees, ghararas and kurtas. The vibrant colours and ornate designs worn by the models dazzled the eye as they walked down the runway.
As the show closed off, the audience were all treated to traditional Indian sweets kindly donated by Maneeshaa Sikumar (BTEC Computing and Systems Development).
