On Tuesday, January 31, 2012, the Student Services Department continued its Get Work Ready workshops with a session entitled Networking. This workshop varied from its predecessors as students were required to actively network with working professionals including SBCS’ very own Dionne Ligoure (Lecturer), Kevin Ruiz (Chief Financial Officer), Mitzi Hall-Denny (Counselor) and Mridula Seemungal (Senior Manager, Central Academic Administration).
The Networking meet-and-greet served as an opportunity for the students to apply what was relayed to them in the previous week by Dionne Ligoure. They learned mainly what was networking, its importance, and the crucial skills needed to create, build and maintain relationships in the business world.
Following the meet-and-greet, the students were provided with general feedback from Dionne Ligoure. She also equipped them with tips on business etiquette, such as what is a proper handshake and how to introduce oneself into or exit from a conversation in a real networking session. She further pointed out the importance of understanding cultural differences and acceptable practices if their careers took them out of Trinidad & Tobago. This, she reiterated, was of vital importance, especially when establishing business relations or contacts.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the session, and several indicated that they were looking forward to the Mock Interviews module, which is scheduled to begin in the next two weeks.
